The Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Amendment Rules, 2026, notified by the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) on 10th February 2026.

This update covers our analysis of the amendment which represent a significant regulatory response to the growing challenges posed by synthetic and AI-generated content, including deepfakes, on digital platforms. The amendment proposes to i) introduce specific definitions and identification requirements for synthetic and AI-generated content; ii) impose new compliance obligations on intermediaries to detect and label such content; iii) tighten timelines for takedown and handling of unlawful content.
Overall, the amendment presents certain legal and operational considerations that require careful mitigation.
